One common sUbject that's come up was valve -ension. The Service Manual calls for 68 to 75 lbs. -=e ·he valve leaves its seat for the F-165 engine and 50 to ---. for the F-150 engine. =~e Manual also says no shims are ever required under the ~--~~ f the valve springs. I remember when I first read this, ot believe what I was reading. Anyone that's done much ork should know when you grind away material, such as youa valve job is done, that valve springs do get tired out ~~-=_e in service. The height of the installed spring has got~-ge some thereby changing the spring tension. e two years later Franklin realized their mistake and ·t with Frariklin Service News No. 4 in November 1, 1949. ews letter said in part, hey, you do have to check the __ -=_ -ension when doing a top or major overhaul and the springsshims, after all, to get the tension up to at least 61 to -=:s. Nothingis said about the F-150 spring tension, but I he ck them too. _oe club members that l've talked to had found weak valve _~ tension on their cylinders and two members had just had --:=~-cYlinders overhauled by different sources. Their findings_ring loads as low as 50 lbs. ~ year aga I found one cylinder on a friend's Stinson that t been overhauled, that had only 46 lbs. on the exhaust ~ e and 52 lbs. on the intake. This engine was experiencing_--=--"k: 9 exhaust valves and only had +/-150 hours on it since -as done. I had to pull all the cylinders and remove the ~=us-valves to clean out carbon built up inside the guide. In '-_ -his work I have virtually found all valve springs had to -~. ed to get them up to 62/63 lbs. Most of them were 8 to 10 OW. lf the tension was up where it should have been maybe--= s~~cking valve problem would not have occurred. -'rn fortunate to have some ·brand new Franklin 220 cylinders :ete with new valves, springs etc. l've tested the unseat __=~~g weights on these and found them to be 64-65 lbs. I feel -s'ould be used as a benchmar~ weight for all Franklins from ~= ::--165 on up. All of these engines use the same springs and _=:-~ed parts. Also the F-220 Engine Manual on page 43 gives the _=' 9 weights as 62 to ,68 lbs. and to use shims if needed. A sampie method to test the unseat weights is by the use of =-=.••.nroom scale. Set the cylinder on the scale wi th a piece of topoi the one valve stern and spring to be tested and t the scale to 0 lbs. With both hands on top of each =~er push down using your upper bOdy weight to help. You can ___ hen the valve opens by releasing it quickly and listening to 'the sound uf:the valve snappingback on.itJs seat~ Do this severa! timei io find the lowest weight at'which the valve opens. Another check you should do is a fluid test in each port. = With everything installed in the cylinder turn it over so both intake and exhaust parts are up. Pour a small amount of gas or solvent in each port, then, lift the cylinder vertically over your hand, looking inside. Observe to see ifthere is anyleakage showing. If they remain dry, you have weIl seated valves. If drops of fluid shows up around the valve, the valve ·should be removed and lapped lightly with some valve lappingcompound, available at most auto part stores. Repeat the fluiä te~t after lapping. If only a small wet area shows at the valve seat it will seal its self in a few hours over running.
