| Dec. 2008 | Charlie Hart died on Nov. 23, 2008 suddenly of a heart attack. He was one of the few original employees and builders of Franklin engines when the shop was still building them in Syracuse. He then went on to fly DC-3's until he lost his medical. Charlie built many a Franklin engine for ISC members and Stinson owners. He also held the Franklin forum at Airventure for many years, and was a key speaker at the Stinson convention in 1995 in San Antonio. He was always ready with advice on Franklin maintenance with a phone call. Charlie is survived by his two sons and his wife, Doris. His sons will not be picking up his engine building business. I know that many of the ISC members had cylinders, engines, etc. over at Charlie's (for extended times) to be rebuilt. The contents of the shop are boarded up and won't be re-opened until spring when the snow lets up in Syracuse. At that time, longtime friend Bob Lyman will be assisting the family in getting the parts back to their rightful owners. If you have Franklin engine parts at Charlie's right now, please write a letter (DO NOT CALL) with a complete description of the parts, to Mrs. Doris Hart, 9074 Henry Clay Blvd., Clay NY 13041. She and Bob Lyman will graciously reply to you as time permits. Charlie will be missed for his expertise and endless sense of humor. |
