Welcome to the International Stinson Club

Stinsoneers, we have been talking about the 2010 Stinson mass fly-in to Oshkosh, but haven’t given you any details. Let’s get some information flowing!

Tim Fox, long time EAA/VAA volunteer, Stinson owner, and leader of the cause will once again lead the ISC efforts. Believe me, because of Tim’s first name acquaintance with EVERYONE at EAA, we get the best of everything! Tim has also twice before “greased the skids” and arranged the required FAA waiver to allow us to do the mass fly-in.

Herk Strumpf, who with Dad, Charlie, flew the Golden Voyager from Florida in the 2007 fly-in, has graciously agreed to be our organizer. Herk will be the “keeper of the list” and the guy you contact for reservations and look to for updates. He is also considering making shirts for the event again. If you would like a shirt please make sure to let him know. The shirts for the last event were embroidered and Stinson logoed in traditional Stinson colors.

Logan is around mainly for his good looks and incredible wit, but also so you can have someone to yell at if you are unhappy about something. (Tim and Herk may actually get him to do a little work, but we’ll see!)

If you flew-in with us in 2004 or 2007, expect a repeat of the past event. If you are new, first off, you are going to have the time of your life! Oshkosh (AIRVENTURE) is an Aviation Paradise…and we are inserting our own Stinson Eden into that paradise! There are 10,000 to 12,000 airplanes of every kind to see; air shows; forums; seminars; product displays…if it has anything to do with aviation, it’s there!

Tentative plans for the mass fly-in begins with a rendezvous in Watertown, WI (RYV), on Saturday July 24. The FAA requires some briefings and practice to meet the waiver requirements. Saturday evening begins the week long Stinson camaraderie and gives us a chance to taste some local culinary delights like bratwurst and custard! You can camp on the airport or we should have rooms arranged at a couple of nearby hotels.

Sunday morning, after final briefings, we line up and wait for a cell phone call from Oshkosh tower for our release. Oshkosh is 50 miles north and we fly in trail formation (1500 ft) at 100 mph. Instead of flying the notam arrival, our Stinson flight is assigned OUR exclusive runway until we are all on the ground. As we exit the runway we then taxi to our reserved 50 parking places…and the fun begins! (We can accommodate more than 50 Stinsons, if need be. More on that later.)

There are several accommodation options. Fly-in can camp under the wing. For "indoor rooms" go online to the EAA website “where to stay”   http://www.airventure.org/planning/where_to_stay.html  , or hotel rooms or rental houses can be found by calling the Oshkosh Convention and Visitors Bureau's housing hotline at 920-235-3007. Dormitory information is available at (920) 424-3226.
